Gerard Geer (Melbourne, Australia) merges creativity with chemistry and anatomy in his artistic practice. His fascination with biological processes and all things anatomical is integral to his work. This fascination led to his undertaking of a bachelor of biological sciences degree at Latrobe University, which he is currently completing. Geer utilises a combination of naturalistic articulation of animal specimens and amalgamations of interspecific forms to create fantastical hybrid creatures. Geer is self-taught in all of the techniques he uses in creating his artworks. On the rare occasions he is not working towards his degree or creating new pieces, he teaches Australia’s first and only skeletal articulation classes.

Gerard Geer’s “Chimaephera” takes its name from the words chimaera and ephemeral: the former because the pieces combine bones from multiple animals to form new imaginary creatures and the latter because of the transitory nature of life. Geer’s approach to the works in this exhibit was to imbue them with as much life and movement as possible, exploring the relationships between creatures within a given work while also challenging our understanding of the natural world.
